Tap-to-call QRs are the simplest possible scan-to-action: scan, tap, the phone dials. Service businesses (plumbers, locksmiths, taxis), restaurants taking reservations, real-estate agents on for-sale signs — anywhere the call IS the conversion.

The encoder uses the tel: URI scheme. Numbers must include the country code (+44, +1, +49) so phones travelling internationally route correctly. Without the country code, a scan in another country may dial a wrong domestic number.

Phones don't auto-dial on scan — they open the dialler pre-filled and wait for a tap. This is a hard OS-level guarantee on every phone we've tested. So even if the QR is on a poster the wind blows in your face, your camera scan won't drain your minutes.

  • Standard tel: URI — supported on every phone.
  • Country code required — works abroad.
  • Pre-fills the dialler; user taps Call.
  • Smaller QR than URLs — fits at thumbnail size.

Phone QR — frequently asked questions

  • Does the QR auto-dial when scanned?
No — phones open the dialler pre-filled and wait for a tap. This is hard-coded into the OS for safety.
  • Why include the country code?
A QR scanned in a different country needs the international prefix to route correctly. Without it, the dialler may interpret your local number as a foreign one and refuse to dial.
  • Can I encode an extension?
Yes — the tel: URI supports comma-pause and DTMF tones. Use the format +15551234567,,123 (two commas = pause; 123 = extension). Most modern phones honour this.
  • Will it work on a tablet or laptop?
On a tablet with cellular, yes. On WiFi-only tablets and laptops, the OS asks if you'd like to call via FaceTime/Skype/etc. Older Windows machines may simply do nothing.
  • How small can I print it?
Phone-number QRs are short, so they encode at low module density. You can go down to about 1.5cm × 1.5cm before scan rates drop.
  • Can I track who calls from the QR?
Not from a static QR — the call goes direct to your line. For attribution, use a dedicated tracking number routed through your CRM or PBX.
