Free location QR code generator

Location QRs open the phone's default map app — Apple Maps on iOS, Google Maps on Android — pinned to the latitude and longitude you pick. Visitors get directions in two taps: scan, then "Go".

We use the geo: URI standard (RFC 5870), the format the IETF officially adopted. It works on every modern phone and lets the user pick which map app handles the link, rather than locking you into one provider.

Use cases: trail markers, scavenger hunts, "we are here" signs at conferences, food trucks listing today's location, vacation-rental check-in. Add an optional search query (e.g., "Acme Coffee") and most maps apps centre on the coordinates AND show your business pin if it's listed.

  • geo: RFC 5870 standard — works on every phone.
  • User picks Apple Maps, Google Maps, Waze, OsmAnd, Citymapper.
  • Optional name/query overlay — show your business pin.
  • Latitude/longitude validated client-side.

Location QR — frequently asked questions

  • Which map app opens?
The phone's default — Apple Maps on iOS, Google Maps on Android. Users with Waze, Citymapper, OsmAnd installed get a chooser. We don't lock you into one.
  • How do I get the latitude/longitude for my place?
Long-press in Google Maps to drop a pin — the lat/lng appears in the search bar. Or use any GPS coordinate tool. The designer validates the values and refuses out-of-range numbers.
  • Can I add a name or label?
Yes — the optional "query" field encodes a search term. Maps centres on the coordinates and tries to match the query to a known business or landmark.
  • Does it work indoors?
It opens the map at your coordinates, but indoor positioning is limited by GPS (which is poor indoors). For "we are here, third floor", combine the location QR with a printed floorplan.
  • Why doesn't my QR open Google Maps on iPhone?
iPhone defaults to Apple Maps for geo: links unless the user has changed the default app. To force Google Maps, encode a comgooglemaps:// URL instead — but that breaks for users without Google Maps installed.
  • How precise are the coordinates?
Six decimal places gives you ~10cm precision — way more than maps render. Four decimal places (~10m) is enough for most use cases.
